Stopping Quickly but Safely

Most drivers nowadays suggest that stopping distances in the Highway Code are out of date. They were calculated back in 1935, and vehicle braking systems have improved drastically since then. But if this is the case, why are there so many crashes each year? A number of things affect braking – tyres, condition of the brakes themselves, road surfaces, weather conditions etc, but the biggest problem is TAILGATING! If you drive a correct and sensible distance behind the car in front, you will always be able to stop in time. Always drive at a speed that will allow you to stop well within the distance you can see to be clear. See Rules 117 – 126 of the Highway Code.
